About

Sean K. Brown, Esq.

I'm a Utah-licensed attorney (Utah Bar #10017, admitted 2004) and the former General Counsel and Managing Director of Juvo Ventures, a preferred seed- and Series A-focused venture capital firm I helped launch under Western Governors University in 2018. At Juvo, I sat on the investment committee, helped build out Fund I and Fund II, oversaw investment/oversight into 29 portfolio companies, and served on more than 20 venture-backed boards in various capacities — as director, observer, and advisor — giving me a ground-level view of what growing companies actually need from outside counsel at each stage. I understand how to support founders at their stage and how to help them navigate and grow their business to the next round of funding or business milestone.

I also served as Senior Associate General Counsel at Western Governors University — a 185,000-student, $1.3B-revenue institution — and General Counsel of the following: WGU Labs, CWGU, Suncrest, Pineview, WGU Academy, leading corporate, compliance, employment, privacy, IP, and edtech legal functions. I have a deep understanding of corporate goals and how a General Counsel can partner on growing the business while providing clear legal guidance that protects and promotes not hinder and deny.

Earlier in my career, I supported business finance and venture law at Ballard Spahr Andrews & Ingersoll in Salt Lake City, and worked at King & Spalding in Atlanta after graduating from the J. Reuben Clark Law School at BYU. I have been a featured speaker and panelists at numerous conferences such as JFF Horizons (2026 in D.C.), ASU-GSV (2026 in San Diego), NCHER, and the Utah Bankers Association.

I was named 2024 Corporate Counsel of the Year by the Utah State Bar (UMBA), and our company received the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 2005. I've also taught Media Law and Ethics as an adjunct professor at Brigham Young University since 2006, and I'm a Thurgood Marshall Fellow. I live in the Lone Peak area of Utah with my wife and our seven kids.

Philosophy

Legal work should reduce friction, not create it.

I've sat on the other side of the table — as an operator, as an investor, and as the person who had to sign off before a deal closed. That shapes how I practice: fast answers in plain English, a clear read on what risk actually matters at your stage, and a bias toward getting the deal done.

My practice is deliberately small. You'll never be handed to an associate, and you'll never wonder who is doing your work. When you need counsel, you get me.
